First Reminder

Mailed July 19, 2010

Text Box: FROM THE DESK OF PASTOR STEVE

Dear Friends:

I’m “back in the saddle again.” That’s a fitting phrase since I have returned to Longmont. But . . . if I had had a horse while I was in Nebraska, I would have been back in the saddle there! Rather confusing! [Unfortunately, we don’t own a horse at the current time.] It’s good to return to Longmont after my month’s leave-of-absence in Nebraska. Pastor Paul talked about Nebraska tourist guides in one of his recent sermons, and he was making some lighthearted fun of the idea of Nebraska tourism. But I certainly enjoyed the beauty of the “south hills” of Lincoln County during the month of June. There was a lot of rain, especially early in the month, so the hills were green and the grass was abundant.

You never know. That is, we never know when our witness in Christ is going to touch the lives of others. I recently spoke at the funeral of a dear friend, and the word of that message traveled across a couple of states, and back again to my wife through her co-worker in Denver. As we have been hearing in the readings from the gospel of Luke week by week, we are sent to bear witness to God’s saving reign—a vision of peace, healing, and hope. Who knows what the Spirit will accomplish as we seek to pray and work in accord with the reality of the good news!

Bible study is fun. We have been providing Bible studies through the ELCA Book of Faith Initiative for several years. Our July study, on selected texts from the gospel of Luke, has opened up wonderful theological insights and applications of the Scripture for our daily lives. “Learning Luke” is the DVD resource that has helped us along the way. Check out www.SelectLearning.org for many related helpful resources from Lutheran and other theologians.

Rally Day is August 29. I knew that this was one of those summers that was going to go by quickly. And here is the reminder that the school year is not far away. Watch the website and our bulletins for further information as Rally Day comes closer.

Until then, we look to see you in worship, gathering around Christ’s means of grace, as the warm days of summer continue.

                            In Christ,
